Seasons. Seasons are a part of life. Whether in the natural with the four seasons that make up a calendar year, or in the spiritual sense with the ever-changing scenery on our walks with God, seasons are all a part of the journey. All seasons we encounter in life are equally given to us by God for our benefit and they present us opportunities to change, grow and develop into the person that God would have us be.
The uniqueness of each season should be embraced
‘There is something unique about each season that cannot be replicated by another…’
Each season has its own beauty and charm, something that makes it unique and something that cannot be replicated by any of the other seasons. Whether it’s the long days of summer, the colours of autumn, the abundant greenery of winter or the new-life of spring, there is a uniqueness to every season that ought to be embraced. This is no different to the spiritual seasons we find ourselves in. There is something unique about each season that cannot be replicated by another, and even when we enter a season that we don’t particularly like, God still has a plan and a purpose to use it. It is therefore important to find the charm and beauty of the season you are in and embrace it as this is generally what God will want to teach you at the place where you currently are.
This can be difficult at times as the seasons we find ourselves in may differ from our expectations of where we hoped we would be. Whether it’s the confusion of suffering, heartaches and heartbreaks or times of testing, there are many seasons that could be labelled “unpleasant” – times that we would wish to just skip over. But in doing this we miss what God would have for us in this unique time as some lessons can only be learned in difficult seasons. Whether it is the determination learnt through having to persevere, the patience learnt through waiting or the faith that is learnt through having to hold on amidst impossibility, God has plenty to teach us through these times. Even amidst the difficulties, we face we need to continue to search for what God intends for us in the place where we are, otherwise we will not make good use of the season we find ourselves in. If we have to go through a time that isn’t particularly enjoyable, at the very least we ought to learn something through it!
Living in the present is key to making the most of every season
‘The next season will come irrespective of whether we make the most of our time right now or not, so we should resolve in our hearts to embrace the season we are in…’
God wants to use all seasons and times in our lives to grow us and shape us to be more like Him and we need to be living in the present – making the most of our lives as we live them now – to make sure He can do this. Whilst looking ahead to the things God is going to do in the future is a good thing, we need to make sure that we do not lose sight of what is happening in our lives right now. No season lasts forever, so neither will the difficulties that we face last forever, but we shouldn’t be waiting till the day these seasons end, but instead, we should be making the most of this time God has for us. Enjoy living life right now: laugh, smile, dance, be happy. Life is to be enjoyed and God wants us to enjoy all the seasons of life. The next season will come irrespective of whether we make the most of our time right now or not, so we should resolve in our hearts to embrace the season we are in and lean into God through any difficulties we encounter.
‘There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens’ – Ecclesiastes 3:1 [NIV]
Some of the seasons we go through in life are fun and some not so much, but all are equally given to us by God for our benefit. We should lean into Him throughout the difficult times knowing that each season is another opportunity for growth, and that no matter what season we find ourselves in, He wants to make us prosper and live a fulfilled and joyful life.
